IPL Auction – An Analysis

This is a complete analysis of the IPL auction, the teams’ top 11 preferences and each team’s good and bad side.

Sunrisers Hyderabad : They would be very happy with their side which according to me, could become the champions. They have a balanced team with a good mixture of young, experienced, Indian and overseas players. This should be their playing 11:

  1. Kane Williamson*(c)
  2. Shikhar Dhawan
  3. Manish Pandey
  4. Shakib Al Hasan*
  5. Wriddhiman Saha
  6. Deepak Hooda
  7. Mohammad Nabi*
  8. Siddharth Kaul
  9. Bhuvneshwar Kumar
  10. Rashid Khan*
  11. Basil Thampi

Rating : 9/10

Kolkata Knight Riders : They are probably the worst team on paper and one of the biggest reasons for that is that they don’t have a decided captain yet. The young Indian fast bowlers and the uncapped talent is an asset though.

  1. Chris Lynn*
  2. Robin Uthappa
  3. Shubman Gill
  4. Dinesh Karthik(c)
  5. Nitish Rana
  6. Andre Russell*
  7. Kamlesh Nagarkoti
  8. Sunil Narine*
  9. Vinay Kumar
  10. Kuldeep Yadav
  11. Mitchell Johnson*

Rating: 5/10

Delhi Daredevils:  The only real problem for this team is that all the cream is at the top. They have picked up too many openers. Excluding that fact, they would be very happy with the team they have ended up with.

  1. Gautam Gambhir (c)
  2. Colin Munro*
  3. Shreyas Iyer
  4. Rishabh Pant
  5. Glenn Maxwell*
  6. Chris Morris*
  7. Naman Ojha
  8. Amit Mishra
  9. Kagiso Rabada*
  10. Shahbaz Nadeem
  11. Mohammed Shami

Rating: 8/10

Mumbai Indians : They are not as good a side they were before because of the lack of spinners and the inexperience of the batting order. Still, they have the best all-rounders in all of the teams and the pace attack is top-notch.

  1. Rohit Sharma (c)
  2. Evin Lewis*
  3. Ishan Kishan
  4. Suryakumar Yadav
  5. Hardik Pandya
  6. Krunal Pandya
  7. Kieron Pollard*
  8. Mustafizur Rahman*
  9. Pat Cummins*
  10. Mayank Markhande
  11. Jasprit Bumrah

Rating : 7/10

Royal Challengers Bangalore : The misfiring superstars have selected too many openers and overseas players and thus, the middle order looks weak.  They have shown faith in Indian bowlers  this season . This was what they had been lacking in the previous seasons.

  1. Parthiv Patel
  2. Brendon McCullum*
  3. Virat Kohli (c)
  4. AB De Villiers*
  5. Mandeep Singh
  6. Colin De Grandhomme*
  7. Chris Woakes*
  8. Washington Sundar
  9. Mohammed Siraj
  10. Umesh Yadav
  11. Yuzvendra Chahal

Rating : 8/10

Rajasthan Royals : The royals are not so royal when it comes to bowling, especially  spin bowling, in this season. Royals fans would still be happy provided the batting and the talented uncapped players. This year, they have bought the two most expensive players in the auction. This could go against them as Ben Stokes, their most expensive player might not even be available for the matches because of his ban.

  1. Da’arcy Short*
  2. Rahul Tripathi
  3. Ajinkinya Rahane (c)
  4. Sanju Samson
  5. Ben Stokes*
  6. Jos Butler*
  7. Stuart Binny
  8. Krishnappa Gowtham
  9. Jofra Archer*
  10. Jaydev Unadkat
  11. Dhawal Kulkarni

Rating : 7/10

Chennai Super Kings : They  are completely different than their Rajasthan counterparts. They have too many spinners and just one Indian and one overseas pace bowler who wouldn’t be any team’s first choice. Their openers are slow-paced and they might not be able to score quickly in the early overs. Overall, they have a deep batting order and a strong middle order.

  1. Faf Du Plessis*
  2. Shane Watson*
  3. Suresh Raina
  4. Ambati Rayudu
  5. Kedar Jadhav
  6. Mahendra Singh Dhoni (c)
  7. Dwayne Bravo*
  8. Harbhajan Singh
  9. Ravindra Jadeja
  10. Mark Wood*
  11. Shardul Thakur

Rating : 6/10

Kings XI Punjab : The kings are too dependent on Andrew Tye for their pace bowling obligations. The spin twins Axar and Ashwin will surely do well. The batting lineup looks solid even though they don’t have a professional wicket-keeper yet. They surprised everyone by taking Chris Gayle but Virender Sehwag admitted in an interview afterwards, that he would only be used for marketing purposes and would be a backup player.

  1. Lokesh Rahul
  2. Aaron Finch*
  3. Karun Nair
  4. Yuvraj Singh
  5. David Miller*
  6. Marcus Stoinis*
  7. Axar Patel
  8. Ravichandran Ashwin (c)
  9. Barinder Sran
  10. Mohit Sharma
  11. Andrew Tye*

Rating : 7/10
