After the evening of 28th January, 2018, not many gave CSK a chance. They said, ‘Their players are too old. Not very fit. Average age is above 30. Guess what? The wrong side of 30 is the right side of experience. The CSK team has proved that age is just a number and that anything is possible. They held their nerve under pressure and that is all because of their experience. I myself had predicted CSK to be I the bottom half of the table but they proved me wrong. In fact, this was a wake up call that the most successful IPL team is back, and they are not done yet.
What Went Wrong!
SRH were totally on track towards victory when they had made 178 and had CSK struggling at 20/1 after 4 overs. I think the trouble was the 13th over. SRH were very much in the game before that over. It was given to Sandeep Sharma and he conceded 27 runs off it. I believe it should have been given to Rashid Khan because if he bowled an economical over at that time, SRH would have come on top of the game. Secondly, they were bowling too defensively. We all knew that the only way to stop CSK was to take wickets. The bowlers failed to do that, and a target as huge as 178 seemed small for the yellow brigade.
Watson A Super King
How would you react if you had failed to make any runs after 10 balls, your partner had gotten out and the required Run Rate was soaring high at 10.5? Watto’s answer was short and sweet. Well, not very sweet for SRH but fruitful for his team CSK. He then made 117 runs off 47 balls with a see ball, hit ball approach. He was most instrumental in proving CSK’s message that ‘Age Is Just A Number’. 2 centuries at an average of around 40 is something you only dream about. But that’s what it has been for Watson, right! A dream season.
IPL 2018 has had many interesting stories. DD – Changing their captain midway but not changing their fortunes. KXIP – Dream start but worst ending possible. RCB – Sudden dream run towards ending but lacking final flourish. MI – Almost qualified but failed to hold their nerves in the pressure moments. RR – The luckiest team who qualified on the basis of individual performances. KKR – Went down with a fight despite being clogged down with injuries and poor form. SRH – Top team but always losing to one team. CSK – The ‘Daddy Army’ who proved that age is just a number.
This IPL will be remembered for how close it all was and how close all the margins were.
