The Iyers will unite in Kolkata this season

The Kolkata Knight Riders were on a mission today. A mission to reclaim all the players in their team last year. They brought back Nitish Rana, Pat Cummins, Sheldon Jackson, and Shivam Mavi. In fact, the only new addition to KKR today was Shreyas Iyer- who is probably going to be their captain. I feel like they’ve done well with getting Shreyas and Cummins at fairly reasonable prices, but they overpaid for both Rana and Mavi. KKR were playing it really fast and loose with their budget today, and there was a point where they bid 10.5 crores for a player despite the facts that they had just 21 crores in their purse, and just 7 slots filled. KKR did not look like their plans worked out there in the auction room today.

KKR really needs to go back to the drawing board and figure out the way forward from here. Despite the questionable auction tactics, they have a decent group of players ready. Tomorrow, they would want to get a pacer, and two world-class middle order batsmen. Not like they have all the money in the world though, so…

Punjab Kings

  1. Mayank Agarwal
  2. Shikhar Dhawan
  3. Jonny Bairstow*
  4.  ____________
  5. Shahrukh Khan
  6.  ____________
  7. Harpreet Brar
  8. Kagiso Rabada*
  9. Rahul Chahar
  10. Ishan Porel
  11. Arshdeep Singh
Punjab got Kagiso Rabada for just 9.25 crores in the auction – a huge bargain!

Punjab Kings are one of the few teams that have managed to do pretty well in this auction. They came into the auction with the highest budget, and they’ve maintained that position throughout the auction, coming out with the highest budget. Punjab managed to get one of the biggest steals of the auction – Kagiso Rabada for just 9.25 crores. Rabada was touted to be the most expensive overseas player in the whole auction, so he’s a stupendous bargain at that price. Dhawan and Bairstow add great attacking talent to the top order, filling the whole top order with intent monsters who are going to get them off to blazing starts. Finally, the Indian bowling department looks pretty strong too, although the absence of a Shami-like Indian spearhead might be a problem.

Tomorrow, they would want to spend their money to strengthen their middle order. They have 6 overseas slots remaining, so they will definitely have an eye on Liam Livingstone. And the like.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

  1. Rahul Tripathi
  2. Abhishek Sharma
  3. Kane Williamson*
  4. Nicholas Pooran*
  5. Abdul Samad
  6. Washington Sundar
  7. Shreyas Gopal
  8. Bhuvneshwar Kumar
  9. Kartik Tyagi
  10. Umran Malik

SRH’s squad as it stands

With how silent they had been at the start of the auction, you’d believe they hadn’t even been given a paddle by the organizers. Fortunately, they got into their own eventually and made a few purchases. Unfortunately, these purchases weren’t the best. They overpaid for a few players, which is quite unlike them. Rahul Tripathi and Abhishek Sharma are amazingly talented youngsters- but 8.5 crores and 6.5 crores respectively demands them to be on their absolute best game.

They got only one overseas player in Nicholas Pooran, and they’ll be hoping to get a lot more overseas players close to his caliber to complete the side. Easier said than done? Probably.
