Strengths

  • The trio of Rashid Khan, Mohammad Shami, and Lockie Ferguson is extremely destructive.
  • Ferguson-Shami duo will be effective in the powerplay and the death.
  • Strong lower order.

Weaknesses

  • Literally no top/middle order batsmen after the openers.
  • Middle order batsmen are untested in the IPL, and have been unreliable in the past.
  • Spin department has quantity, but not too much quality other than Rashid Khan.
  • No reliable pacers except Lockie and Shami.
  • The overseas contingent is probably the weakest of all the teams.
  • Tewatia might not be the perfect No.7 they’ve paid him to be.

Opportunities

  • Players like Abhinav Manohar Sadarangani and Vijay Shankar probably wouldn’t start for any other IPL franchise at the moment, so they have a huge opportunity to repay Gujarat’s faith in them.
  • Shubman is quickly losing favor in Team India’s limited overs teams. He needs to embrace his role as the leader of this batting lineup and prove that he can step up to the big stage.
  • Hardik has lost his place in the Indian team in all formats. As the captain of this team, he needs to showcase his all-round talent and prove he is still a valuable asset.

Threats

  • Age might be a concern for David Miller and Matthew Wade.
  • Hardik Pandya has heavily struggled with injuries recently.
  • In the case of injuries, they don’t have good backups for almost any of their starters.

Final Word

When Gujarat Titans drafted Rashid Khan, Hardik Pandya, and Shubman Gill, I wrote in my blog post ‘They’re already in the contention to be one of the best teams in the IPL’. Well, now I’d like to say I was wrong. Gujarat has completely messed up the auction. Their head coach Ashish Nehra is one of the least strategic-minded people in the whole ecosystem, and it has reflected in the squad he has built. It is quite tragic that there are much more talented coaches who actually make good use of statistics and technology who are just sitting unemployed while these big-name traditionalists get the big bucks. They finish dead last in my rankings. I dread watching this team play, except when they play against RR. I’ll take those 2 points, thank you.
